Importance of Coverage

Why is getting or keeping my health insurance important?

Health insurance can help protect you from unexpected medical costs and make it easier to get the care you need. Having coverage:

  • Helps cover costs when you get health care, from checkups to emergencies
  • Helps you stay up to date on preventive care for a healthier future
  • Helps keep eligible dependents, like your spouse or children, covered
Open Enrollment happens once a year from Nov. 1 – Jan. 15. During this time, anyone can update their coverage or choose a new health plan.

If you miss the Open Enrollment deadline, you’ll generally need to wait until the next Open Enrollment Period unless you experience a qualifying life event that makes you eligible for Special Enrollment.

RESEARCH

How can I research my health plan options?

BCBSTX offers the below plan types depending on where you live. Your plan type will determine how you access care and which doctors and hospitals are in your network:

  • POS: Point of Service (POS )
  • HMO: Health Maintenance Organization (HMO )
Plans are offered at Bronze, Silver and Gold metallic levels. Your plans' metallic level helps show the cost of covered care.
